The legislature should require disclosure of sale prices for all real property and limit equity lawsuits for commercial and industrial properties.

There has been a major shift in the property tax burden from big business to homeowners. Large corporations have the resources to sue for lower valuations with little transparency, and homeowners pick up the tab.

Property taxes are making our area unaffordable for median income neighbors who have lived here a long time and don’t want to have to sell and move. If someone wants to take advantage of the prices newcomers will pay for the privilege of tearing the little old house down and replacing it with a McMansion, fine and well. They should not be forced to sell though because they cannot afford the tax on the new appraised value. None of my other assets have true appreciated value until I sell. My property taxes are now $1000/month. And that does not include all the other fees and taxes that the City collects from me as a homeowner.

Property taxes are forcing the good people in my neighborhood, who only make an average wage and are satisfied to live in a small bungalow, to sell to those who can afford to pay a high price to tear it down and build a McMansion. It’s a crime. If someone wants to take advantage of the high prices being paid, that’s fine. A current resident should not be forced to sell because they cannot afford to pay $1000/month in taxes in addition to all the other fees imposed on a homeowner in Austin.
