A Call to Fix Our Broken Property Tax Appraisal Process

Brigid on the doorsPetition to the State Legislature:

We urge the Texas Legislature to fix the property tax appraisal process. The current system is placing an unfair burden on home owners, making Austin and Travis County increasingly unaffordable.

Property taxes are forcing the good people in my neighborhood, who only make an average wage and are satisfied to live in a small bungalow, to sell to those who can afford to pay a high price to tear it down and build a McMansion. It’s a crime. If someone wants to take advantage of the high prices being paid, that’s fine. A current resident should not be forced to sell because they cannot afford to pay $1000/month in taxes in addition to all the other fees imposed on a homeowner in Austin.

And why do the mega churches that have acres and acres not pay taxes? Just adding the churches to the tax rolls would alleviate much burden on the homeowners.

Our home in Crestview has gone from one worth $75, 000 to one worth $500, 000, with the matching tax burden to go with it. While we could afford the original house, we could never afford to live in the neighborhood if we purchased now, yet we are being taxed as if we could. We are having to consider leaving our home of over 15 years and the neighborhood my husband was born and raised in because of the almost $10,000 in taxes added to our “mortgage”. Please restructure the rates on homes and businesses to create a more equitable system and allow us to stay in our beloved home and neighborhood.

And not a moment too soon! County commissioners must have more say in development and developers because now those who can (have money and influence) build will build – often in the wrong places, places that harm the environment the place where everyone live. Thanks, Brigid.

It is time to expose the “formula” as little more than a direct transfer of wealth from those who have littel to those who have nearly all of it. A scam perpetrated by big business to suck money out of the home owners of Travis county. This was done delibertly and frankly I am sick and tired of subsidizing mega business who already have deep pockets at the expense of ordinary taxpayers. It is time to show the bullies for what they are. It is beyond time to re-balance the formula.

I believe Bridget will do all she can to help the people in Travis Co. by trying to fix the way tax appraisals are done. Let us help her to get elected as County Commissioner Precinct 2.

I have been a Realtor in Austin for 30 years. It is unfair to watch seniors and folks in neighborhoods all over town being driven out of their homes because they cannot afford their property taxes. These high taxes also discourage investors from purchasing in Texas because of the high property taxes! Lets fix the system!
